Safety at Camp John Marc
Camp John Marc is committed to making the camp experience a safe experience. All staff and volunteers are carefully screened, selected and trained. The camp medical team is the same medical team that cares for the camper year-round at their home hospital or doctor’s office. Risk management principles are strictly followed, and emergency procedures are regularly reviewed and practiced.
We also believe every camper should feel safe while they are at camp. At the beginning of each week-long camp, we have an age-appropriate safety conversation in which we share our policies and procedures and empower campers to speak up if something feels unsafe or not right.
At Camp John Marc, safety is a responsibility as well as a top priority.
Staff and Volunteer Safety Standards
Every Camp John Marc volunteer and staff member completes an application and participates in an interview, background check, and reference check. All volunteers and staff are trained on the Camp John Marc Code of Ethics, child development considerations and risk management. Each week they are also educated on the specific medical diagnosis and needs of the attending camp population. Additionally, volunteers at week-long camps participate in Abuse Prevention System’s online sexual abuse awareness training before arriving at Camp.
Risk Management Principles
Risk Management plays an important role in maintaining a safe camp environment. Every Camp John Marc staff member commits to following a set of Risk Management Principles that include responsibilities such as knowing exactly who is coming to an activity and inspecting all equipment before each use. Reviewing each camper’s medical notes is also an important part of CJM Risk Management.
Emergency Procedures
Emergency procedures are carefully reviewed and practiced regularly. Emergency procedures cover a variety of situations including a lost camper, severe weather, camp intruder, violent situations, and medical emergencies where transport is required by helicopter or ambulance.
Accreditations & Licenses
Camp John Marc is accredited by the American Camp Association. The ACA accreditation ensures Camp John Marc meets industry standards related to health and safety, camp operation, and program quality.
Additionally, Camp John Marc is licensed in accordance with the provisions of the Texas Youth Camp Safety and Health Act, Chapter 141, Health and Safety Code, Section 141.002(5).
