Think Summer
Camp John Marc is a year round camp specially designed to serve campers who have a chronic illness or physical disability. Camp John Marc is loacted in Meridian, Texas, 85 miles southwest of Dallas in Bosque County, the top of the beautiful Texas hill county!

to help us fulfill our mission of providing campers with a high quality camping experience in a natural outdoor setting. We believe this empowering experience and the skills campers gain while at camp positively impact the camper year round. We begin to review applications for summer employment in January.

Think Summer at Camp John Marc
Each year a select 24 member team works to provide over 1,200 campers with a high quality week at camp. Members of our team must possess the skills and talents necessary to lead one or more activities at camp. Team members must be flexible and child focused. If you are interested in applying please fill out an application and return it to our Dallas office.
2008 Summer Staff Positions
Archery Instructor
- Daily safety check of equipment
- Archery equipment kept 100% functioning
- Ensure safety regulations are followed at all times
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities
Required Certifications: First Aid, CPR, Basic Archery Instructor
Cabin Counselor
- Work with a team of two other counselors to supervise and care for 6-8 campers
- Knowledge of campers’ medical needs after training
- Knowledge of program, schedule, activities, policies, and procedures after training
- Attend activity areas with campers
- Provide necessary daily personal care
Canoeing/Kayaking Instructor
- Knowledge of canoe and kayak procedures
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities
- Ensure that safety regulations are followed
Required Certifications: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR, Canoeing certification/Kayak training
Challenge Course Instructor
- Daily safety check of equipment
- Daily set up and break down of elements
- Lead group games, initiatives, and low elements
- Implement “challenge by choice” philosophy
Required Certifications: Challenge Course certification, First Aid, CPR
Creative Arts Leader
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities in Music, Drama, Film, Arts and Crafts, Pottery, Creative Writing, Photography, etc
- Encourage self-expression through the process of creating plays, movies, art projects, stories
- Display camper art work
Fishing Leader
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities
- Plan and implement special fishing activities
- Ensure that safety regulations are followed
Required Certifications: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR
Outdoor Adventure/Nature Leader
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities
- Daily care of any small animals
- Share appreciation for all aspects of nature at Camp
- Lead activities in the Star Lab-requires basic knowledge of astronomy and constellations
Life Guard
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities
- Demonstrate rescue and emergency proceduresEnsure that safety regulations are followed
Required Certifications: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR
Sports and Games Leader
- Teach a variety of sports and games to a diverse camper group
- Adapt sports and games each week according to the particular diagnosis
- Lead group games, initiatives, and low elements
- Ensure that safety regulations are followed
Wrangler
- Work with and evaluate horses
- Evaluate and classify campers’ riding ability
- Plan, implement, and evaluate daily activities
- Daily check and care of horses and equipment
Required Certifications: Certification from an organization or riding school with instructor training (i.e., CHA), First Aid, and CPR
2008 Summer Staff Nuts and Bolts
- Summer 2008 salary is $200 a week. All position assignments are based on age, education, and experience.
- Each staff member gets one paid week off
- Each staff member is off every Friday by 12:00 pm to Saturday at 1:00 pm. Five times during the summer each staff member is off the entire weekend from Friday at 12:00 pm to Sunday at 12:00 pm.
- Staff members live in comfortable, air conditioned, duplex style lodging. Each side of the lodge sleeps four staff members and has two bedrooms, one large bathroom, a living area, a washing machine and dryer, and a small kitchenette.
- Each week staff members are paired with a host cabin. Hosting a cabin is a great way to build relationships with campers. As a host you eat all of your meals with the same group of campers and spend time in the cabin each night after evening activities.
- Projects are an especially unique component of the Camp John Marc program. In addition to regular camp activities, each camper chooses one project to participate in each day. Projects are a unique time for skill development and growth. Projects are a great way for CJM staff to share their special talents with campers.
- Each CJM staff member receives two uniform camp shirts to be worn
on Sundays and Fridays for camper arrival and departure and many
more camp shirts throughout the summer!

Think About Volunteering One or a Few Weeks: Each week a team of volunteers serves in the role of cabin counselors. Three volunteer counselors provide supervision and care to a cabin of 6-8 campers. Contact the Camp John Marc office for more information on volunteer opportunities.
